Frequently
Asked
Questions
-
What happens at our first appointment? The initial session is a chance for us to meet and decide if we are a good match to work together. We will explore your current stressors and symptoms, and discuss goals and treatment options. This first session is called an ‘intake’ because I will be taking in a lot about you and providing a sense of how I can be of assistance. There is no obligation to continue. Sometimes we may find that a specialist or alternative treatment may be more beneficial. If you would like to continue we will agree on a scheduled session time and move forward.
-
What should I do to prepare for our first appointment? To make the best use of our time together, please complete the new client forms ahead of time. Once we set a time to meet I will email you web based forms to fill out. If you have questions after reading the forms bring them to our first session so we can clarify them. Most importantly, realize that there is no pressure and it will be a welcoming environment.

What if you are not a good fit for me?I understand that finding a counseling relationship that “feels” right is important. In the first few sessions, we will explore that relationship. I will learn a little about you and what is bringing you into counseling, and you can learn about my style and what to expect. This is a time for you to share your story and then we can determine if I will be a good fit for your needs. Sometimes we may find that a specialist or alternative treatment may be more beneficial. If you decide you could work better with a different treatment style, I will not take it personally. I would love to help you find a practitioner who would be a good fit for you.
-
How long are counseling sessions?Standard sessions are 55 minutes in length, although abbreviated sessions and crisis sessions (those scheduled within 24 hours) are available for existing clients under limited circumstances for a modified fee.
-
How much do sessions cost?Fees vary by session type. $250 per session for Relational Counseling, including Family and Couples Sessions. $175 per session for Individual Counseling. Crisis, abbreviated, and prolonged session rates can be found here.
-
Do you take insurance?I am “out-of-network” and do not directly bill insurance companies. However, I can provide you with a monthly superbill for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Please verify with your insurance that they cover “out-of-network, outpatient, mental health services”. I would recommend working with Better to aid you in the process of getting all you are entitled to with your out-of-network benefits.

How long does treatment take? The length of treatment is as various as the individual. Often issues are a culmination of long term symptoms or imbalances, and creating holistic and lasting improvement can take time. While some solution focused work can last 6-10 weeks, treatment typically lasts at least 12 weeks. In most cases, our clients choose to meet at a frequency of once per week until they’ve started reaching their goals, at which time we begin to taper our sessions to bi-weekly and then monthly for a brief period.

How does online therapy work? The changes we have all experienced in the wake of COVID-19 have challenged us all to try new things and to go out of our comfort zones. Telehealth is just one more example of this. Most clients find that telesessions are a highly beneficial alternative to in-person sessions, offering advantages like saving on travel and staying in the comfort of your home. We also want to be mindful of your privacy, however. Please find a quiet private space and time for your session where you won't be disturbed. If you are a couple, please be together in the same room for our session. Those with limited privacy can schedule a phone consultation to discuss options. We will speak via video using my confidential online platform. I recommend you log in early to download the app and check your internet connection and sound so our time together can be focused and productive.
-
What is your cancellation policy? Our professional time for your session is set aside specifically for you. If you do not show up for your scheduled therapy appointment, and you have not notified us at least 48 hours in advance, you will be responsible for the full cost of the missed session. If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, please make every effort to notify us as soon as possible.
-
Can I call and speak with someone? All calls to (206) 338-5239 go to our confidential voicemail where you can leave us a message. We generally return calls within 1 business day.
-
What if I don’t see any available sessions times that work for me?Please contact me and let me know that you’d like to be added to my waiting list. Be sure to indicate two days and times that you are available for weekly session. I will do my best to find a spot for you as soon as something opens up!

What if I still have questions?Let’s schedule a free, 15-minute phone consultation. We’ll use this time to discuss your situation and concerns, and to determine if we might be a good fit for you. If we don’t feel like the best fit, we’ll gladly provide referrals to other providers. Simply reach out by phone or email and we’ll set up a time to talk further. Afterwards, if you decide you’re ready to move forward, we’ll schedule your first session. To schedule a phone consult, just shoot us an email using our contact form.
